Creature forest scene across a back

Back · Mixed · Photo

A large tattoo covers the upper back, showing four shaggy, horned creatures standing among tree branches in a night scene. The creatures and foliage are drawn in fine grey linework with soft shading, in the style of a storybook illustration. A pale yellow moon and blue sky with small stars sit behind them, and the wider composition spans both shoulder blades.

The creatures came down from the hill the night the moon hung low over Hollin Wood, their feet crunching the frost and their horns catching the light like bent candles. Maud Pennick, who had been told all her life to bar the shutters after dark, stood in the lane with a loaf under one arm and a jug of goat's milk in the other, and did not run.

Her grandmother had a rule for such nights: never give them your name, never take their gifts, and never look at the one who walks at the back. Maud had broken the first two before she was ten. The third she had never understood, because the one at the back always seemed to be looking at her, his tail dragging a line through the leaf litter and his face as round and sleepy as a harvest moon.

She set the bread on the stone wall. The biggest of them, shaggy as a haystack, sniffed it and grumbled, and the smallest climbed up beside it and tore off a piece with crumbs stuck to his whiskers. 'Thank you,' said Maud, because her grandmother had never said what happened if you were polite. The creatures leaned into one another and began to sing, low and rumbling, a tune like a cradle creaking on its rockers.

When they had gone back up the hill, Maud found a stone on the wall, pale and round as the moon and still warm from a hand that was not there. She kept it under her pillow for forty years. Even now, on the nights the frost comes early, she hears the song drifting faint from the ridge, and she leaves the shutters open a crack.
