Matching paper plane tattoos on forearms
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two small paper plane tattoos are shown in simple black outline, one on each of two forearms. Each design is a single, clean line drawing with little or no shading, and the planes are positioned near the wrist. The arms rest on a pale sheet printed with small white flowers and green leaves, with a hand and a bare foot with red toenails visible in the frame.

The wind had swung round to the north the morning the first plane came over the harbour wall, skidding across the wet cobbles and lodging under a heap of nets. Mabel Tregear picked it up, flattened it against her knee, and read the pencil lines inside: tide at six, herring boats in, ferry cancelled. Her sister Nan had always folded her letters that way, pointed at both ends, because Nan said a letter ought to know where it was going.

Their father kept the lighthouse on the far side of the bay, and after the flood took the causeway the sisters had talked only by paper. Each morning Mabel walked to the wall at the turn of the tide and threw her plane across the channel. Each evening Nan threw hers from the rocks below the light. Most came down in the brine. Some reached the slipway. The gulls in Porthgwidden grew fat on the ones that didn't, and nobody thought it strange.
In the back end of the year a plane came over with nothing written on it at all, only a single fold where the words should be. Mabel turned it over three times before she understood. Nan had walked the causeway stones at low water, all the way to the middle, and found them still standing.
So Mabel went out with a plane in her coat pocket and met her sister on the last hump of rock, the two of them balanced like gulls, neither one able to say what the wind was for. They raised their arms and let go together. The planes lifted, leaned into the northerly, and came down side by side in a rock pool, noses touching, the tide already coming in over them.
