Two black cat tattoos on the backs of hands: a fine line outline of a cat with an arched back on one hand, and a solid black silhouette of a cat on the other.

Two cat tattoos on the backs of hands

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two cat tattoos sit on the backs of two hands, which are held close together against a plain light background. The cat on the left hand is drawn in thin, single black linework with an arched back, a curled tail and a visible face. The cat on the right hand is a solid black silhouette in the same arched pose, with no interior detail.

Every morning at ten past seven, the number 14 bus came round the bend by the Co-op on Hebden Road, and every morning Biscuit, the ginger tom, arched his back at it from the top of the bin store, tail curled like a question mark. Nobody on the bus ever looked up. Mrs Okafor from number nine said he was showing off. Her husband said he was practising for the vet.

The black cat who lived behind the chip shop had never once been seen to arch at anything. He was called Ink, because he was the colour of the bottom of a pot, and he spent his days in the cardboard boxes outside Dhillon's Fish Bar, watching the gulls with the flat patience of a bailiff. Biscuit had watched him back, through the knot holes in the fence, for most of a summer.

It was the first cold week of October when the fence panel finally came loose. Biscuit squeezed through with his tail up, expecting a fight, and found Ink sitting in the damp with his back bowed so high his spine looked like a drawbridge. Neither of them moved. A van reversed past the gap, beeping. Then Ink stretched one long leg out, slowly, the way you would test a frozen puddle, and Biscuit did the same, and for a moment the two of them made one strange shape against the bins, a ginger line and a black shadow, pulled tight like a question and its answer.

The next morning the number 14 came round the bend and both cats were on the bin store, arched, and this time the driver tooted. Mrs Okafor said it was the most useful thing to happen on Hebden Road since the council filled in the potholes.
