Three small dinosaur tattoos on fingers and hand

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Three small cartoon-style dinosaur tattoos are shown on two pairs of hands held together: a triceratops on the side of one finger, a T-rex standing on another finger, and a brontosaurus on the wrist. The linework is thin and uniform, with no shading, and the figures are simple outlines filled with no colour. The plain, slightly blurred background of a room and the close framing keep the focus on the three small designs.

The snow had been falling since Tuesday, and by Friday the Cloverdale Arms had run out of everything except biscuits and bad tempers. Mrs Okonedo had banned card games after the vicar accused the landlord's nephew of cheating at snap. So the three of them sat in the back parlour with a candle and a tin of custard creams, pretending the cold was not getting into their knuckles.

Derek the triceratops had been spending the evening trying to teach Pip the T-rex to say please. Pip, who had been stood on a finger for eleven years and felt it had earned him some dignity, refused. Gus the brontosaurus, who was the youngest and the longest, lay across the hearth like a draught excluder and said he didn't see why anyone needed manners when they had a neck like his.

At half past nine the lights went out for the third time. Derek sighed in the dark. "Right," he said. "Whoever tells the best lie gets the last custard cream."

Pip thought about it for a long moment. "I can see the stairs from here," he said at last.

Nobody spoke. Then Gus lifted his long head, looked at the black doorway, and very quietly said, "That is not a lie, and you know it." Derek, who had never once in eleven years let anyone else have the last biscuit, slid the tin across the floor without a word.
