World map outline on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A hand with pink painted nails rests on a brown leather surface, showing a thin black outline tattoo of the world map on the inner wrist. The continents are drawn with single fine lines and no shading, and the map sits across the wrist and up towards the forearm. The ink is dark and monochrome against the pale skin, and the background of blue fabric and brown leather is out of focus.

Sit closer, the lot of you, the generator is wheezing and the toffee apple man has packed his sugar away. This is about Tobias Wren, who drew maps for a living from a caravan parked behind the dodgem cars. The Fairground Guild paid him to put the whole round world on one length of linen, so the showmen could find their way from Skegness to Salisbury without asking a single farmer for directions.

He worked by lamplight with a pen so fine it took him a week to fill a thumbnail. Each night the coastlines grew, Africa first, then the ragged edge of the Americas, and each morning the fair had moved on, so he rolled his linen and chased the wagons down the lane. Nobody had told him that the world does not hold still for a man with ink on his cuffs.

On the third night a wind came off the estuary and snuffed every lamp. In the dark Tobias felt the linen shift under his fingers, and when he struck a match the lines had crept. Britain had edged a finger's width towards Spain, and a small island he had never heard of sat neat as a button where the Atlantic should be. He stared at it for an hour, then drew a single thin line from the island back to the caravan door, the way a visitor might come.

The fair packed up before dawn and nobody ever found Tobias, though the map turned up pinned inside a ticket booth in Margate, and the island is still there if you know where to look. Some say the fair goes there every winter. So if you ever find a road on a map you don't remember drawing, follow it, and mind the step at the end. Now, who wants a toffee apple?
