Matching small crown tattoos on two hands

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two small crown designs sit on the backs of two hands that rest together. The crown on the left is drawn in thin black outline with beaded detail along its base, while the crown on the right uses fine dots and soft grey shading. Both are in black ink on a dark car interior background, with a pearl bracelet and a ring visible nearby.

The two narrowboats came through Stanwick Lock after midnight, the way they always did, with their brass chimneys dark and their names too small to read from the gate. I took the windlass from its hook and waited for the first one to nose in. On its cabin side a black crown sat above the waterline, drawn in thin paint with a row of beads along its base, and I remember thinking it looked like something a child would draw if the child had been taught properly.

Ruth Calloway owned the pair. She had bought the older boat from her father, and when she bought the second she asked a sign-writer from Keighley to put the same crown on it so the two would never be mistaken on the cut. He did the outline again, but when he came to the lock with his tins that night he had changed his mind about the rest. He brushed fine dots across the gold and worked grey shading into the arches, so the crown seemed to stand in its own shadow.

I asked her why the crowns did not match. She did not answer straight away. She stood on the gunwale with a torch in her teeth and watched the water fill the chamber, and then she said the first boat had carried her through the bad winter, and the second was the one she had promised to sell once the loan was cleared. She wanted something on it that would look back at her from the towpath and remind her which one she had kept.

The top gate groaned open. Both boats slid out into the black water, one crown bright and one smudged grey, and I stood there with the windlass in my hand until the last lamp had gone round the bend.
