Two cats with a heart-shaped tail outline
Black and grey · Flash
The image shows two cats sitting close together, one slightly behind the other, with their ears and heads angled towards each other. Their tails wrap round at the base to form a large heart shape, drawn as a simple outline. The left version is a solid grey silhouette with a lighter outline, and the right version is a plain line drawing on a white background.

The landlady at Marram House did not allow animals, so nobody mentioned the two grey cats who slept in the airing cupboard. Ada found them there on a wet Tuesday in September, one curled small and wary, the other pressed against its back as if the cupboard were the last dry place on the Norfolk coast. She left a saucer of pilchard on the landing and went down to breakfast with her wet coat over her arm.

By October the bigger cat had a name, Tuppence, and the smaller one would answer to nothing but its own sulk. They sat together on the windowsill of the front room where the lodgers took their tea, always the same way: one shoulder against the other, heads tipped in, tails swung round and knotted at the base so that from the garden it looked as though someone had drawn a heart on the glass. Mrs Pell pretended not to notice. She dusted around them every morning and never once moved the teapot.
When the house was sold in November, the new owner, a man with a clipboard and no interest in cats, set a date for the clearance. Ada packed her trunk and wrapped the good cups in newspaper. On the last morning she found the two of them on the front step, sitting shoulder to shoulder as if they had been told the carrier was coming. She picked them up, one under each arm, and carried them down to the harbour wall where the fishermen threw out the gutting scraps.
Tuppence went into her coat with a grumble. The smaller one climbed to her shoulder and stayed there, tail looped round her neck like a scarf. Ada decided she could live with being chosen by two cats who had clearly made up their minds long before she had made up hers, and she walked inland with the tide going out behind her.
