We came down to the lock at Hungerford with a load of coal for Mrs Adair's stove, my mother at the tiller, which was how she liked it. She had the hull in the chamber before the gates were fully open, and she shouted at me to hold the rope, Ellen, not wind it, as though a girl of nine could tell the difference while a barge tried to climb out of the water.

The lock-keeper, a long Welshman called Idris who kept humbugs in his waistcoat pocket, leaned on the beam and watched us rise. Mum never liked being watched. When the water settled she came forward along the gunwale with the coil over one shoulder and sat beside me on the coal hatch, and for once she didn't tell me what I'd done wrong. She pointed instead at the bank, where a pair of swans had come up out of the reeds with a grey cygnet between them, close enough to touch the line.
We watched until the top gates swung and the boat slid out onto the flat, brown water. 'They keep the young one in the middle,' she said. 'Always the middle, until it can manage on its own.' I thought she meant the swans. It was years before I understood she had been talking about the tiller too, and the way she had finally let go of it that afternoon with one slow hand.
I steer with my left hand a little open now, the way she showed me, so the boat knows someone is leaning in.
