Horse head in a heart outline

Black and grey · Flash

A single bold black outline shows a horse's head in profile, with the muzzle and ear drawn as continuous lines. The heart shape is formed by the back of the horse's neck and head and a curved outline that meets at a point at the bottom. The design is flat black on white with no shading or colour, and the subject fills the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The mare came out of the trees the week after the thaw, and nobody in Harrowfield would claim her. She stood at the edge of the bean field with her head low, looking at the houses as though she were counting them. Old Mab Tenning said she was a forest horse and would go back when she was ready, so the children left bread on the stile, and the mare took it from their palms without once touching them.

Ruth Carrow, who kept the mill, had lost a son to the river that spring. She went out to the stile one evening with a bridle over her shoulder, not for the mare but because she could not sleep, and found the animal already waiting with her head turned toward the dark line of trees. Ruth said nothing. She only walked, and the mare walked beside her, and they went along the boundary wall the whole way round the village until the sky went green and the owls quit.

When they came back to the stile, the mare lowered her head to the frost and left a dark print in the grass where her muzzle had pressed. In the morning the men from the parish saw the shape of it: a long head bent into a curve, the throat running round to meet itself at a point. Ruth stood by the wall and traced the line with a stick. Nobody in the village ever agreed on what the mare had meant by it.

After that the mare went back into the trees and was not seen again. But every spring the frost came up in the same outline along the boundary wall, and the children learned to walk it, and Ruth kept the mill and her son's coat on the peg by the door.
