Two dogs with poppies and flowers
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
A pen line drawing of two dogs' heads, side by side and facing right, with a faint circle behind them. Below them are poppy blooms, leaves and spiky star-like flowers. The linework is fine and uniform in dark ink with little shading, and the design is arranged as a compact spray of motifs on plain paper.

Marl had walked the eastern wall of Ostrene for eleven winters, and the dogs walked it with him. Bramble went at his left heel, broad and yellow and always a little ahead, while Tess kept to the right with her nose low to the frost. The kingdom had no two maps that agreed, but everyone agreed about the poppy fields beyond the wall. They bloomed red in midsummer, and the old women said that anyone who crossed them after the bell rang would sleep until the field remembered them.

On the night the moon came up thin and lopsided over the ridge, Tess stopped at the first stone and would not go on. Marl knelt and felt her ribs trembling under his palm. Bramble sat down beside her, the way he did in church, and looked out across the flowers with his ears up. Something moved at the far edge of the poppies, a figure in a long coat carrying a lantern that gave no light, only a pale circle that rolled along the ground like a coin.
Marl drew his knife and found he did not need it. The figure stopped, lifted the lantern, and turned toward them the way a sleeper turns toward a voice. It was his brother, who had gone over the wall the spring before with a sack of barley and no word. He looked older and quieter, and he was smiling as though he had been waiting for the dogs to come and fetch him.
Marl did not cross. He sat on the stone beside the dogs until the moon was full and the lantern had burned down to nothing. In the morning he walked the wall alone, with two dogs at his heels and a heel of grey bread in his coat for the road home.
