Two elephants with heart-shaped trunks
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two cartoon-style elephants face each other on the inner forearm, with their raised trunks meeting to form a heart shape at the top of the design. The tattoo is drawn in a thin, single black outline with no shading, and the skin tone around it is the only colour in the photograph. The design sits centrally in the frame, with a grey sleeve and a hand visible at the edges.

The two elephants had been walking the same road for so long that the villagers at Harrowgate Junction stopped remarking on them. Every morning the younger one, Pim, came down from the hills with mud still drying on her ears, and every morning the old tusker, Aldo, was waiting by the signal box with his trunk curled up like a question. They did not speak the same language. They did not need to. When the 7.14 began to sigh its way out of the station, he would lift his trunk, and she would lift hers, and the two of them would touch tips in the air above the platform until the carriages pulled away.

One winter the snow came early and stayed late, and the line froze at the bend below the water tower. The stationmaster sent word that the trains would not run until spring. Pim did not come down from the hills that week, nor the next. Aldo stood at the signal box regardless, trunk lifted, through the sleet and then through the first thin sunshine, until a porter asked him gently whether he thought she might come by train.
She came on foot, in the end, along the frozen track, with her trunk coiled tight against the cold. When she reached him she did not lift it. She bent her head, and he bent his, and their trunks met and wrapped together at the top, twisting into a shape that made the porter laugh out loud. Nobody on the platform could say afterwards whether it was a heart or a knot. Aldo said it was a heart, and that was the end of the argument.
