Three small round-headed spirits on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows three small, round-headed white figures drawn in black outline, each with two dot eyes and a simple smile, set side by side and slightly overlapping. The linework is thin and even, with the figures left unshaded so the skin tone shows through their bodies. The design sits on the inner forearm near the wrist, with the warm, slightly grainy photo lit from the side and a blurred background.

Tamsin Rowe found them in the bottom of a lobster pot on the slipway, three pale things no bigger than teacups, each with two dark dots for eyes and a smile that looked drawn before the rest of them. She was mending net at the time and had her thumb in the wrong knot. She did not scream. Her father always said the harbour had taught her that much.

They would not go back into the water. She tried, tipping them over the wall at low tide, and they came up the steps behind her in a row, leaning together like old men at a bus stop. Her mother gave them the windowsill of the chandlery, where they watched the boats come in and counted them under their breath. Nobody could hear the numbers. You could only see their round heads bob.
On the night the Mary Lowe went out with her lamp unlit, the three of them pressed against the glass until their heads squeaked on it. Tamsin, who had never believed her father's stories about lamps and drowned men, lit the storm lantern and set it on the sill between them. They leaned out, all three, toward the black water, the way the cliffs lean toward the sea.
At four in the morning the Mary Lowe came round the breakwater with her lamp still dark, steered by nothing anyone on the quay could name. Tamsin counted the crew as they stepped off, then counted again, because the number was right. On the sill, three smiles were wet with spray, and the lantern was still warm.
