Fine line · Other · Mixed · Photo
A black single-line drawing of a woman's profile faces left, with her hair flowing back into a continuous line. A small red heart sits above her head and a pink motif, possibly a butterfly, sits near her face. The tattoo is shown close up on a wrist against a plain light background.

The customs woman at Lenka Ford had stamped papers for thirty years and had never once asked a traveller what they carried in their heads. So when the thin boy came up the bank in the grey hour before the bell, with a length of black thread wound twice around his wrist and nothing else in his hands, she only lifted the gate and waited for him to speak.

He did not speak. He held out his arm, and she saw the thread ran from his wrist down into the river and under the water, where the current could not drag it loose. His mother had tied it the morning she crossed to the far village to sell honey, and she had said, as the old women always said, that a line drawn without lifting the pen would always find its way back to the hand that drew it. The woman pressed a red coral bead into his palm, which was the toll the ford had charged since before the bridges, and told him to keep his eyes on the thread and not on the water.
Halfway over, the river rose to his chest and the thread went slack. He stopped, afraid, and a pale butterfly, the colour of a wet petal, came down out of the mist and settled on the gate-post behind him, turning its wings slowly as if it had somewhere to be. He followed the line of its flight instead of the thread, and the water shallowed under his feet.
On the far bank his mother was waiting with a jar of honey and a face she would not show anyone. The thread ended in a knot tied around her own wrist, neat as a full stop. He asked her why she had not come back for him. She only said the bead was for the next person who needed to cross, and that she would keep the line tight until he was old enough to hold it himself.
