The fletcher's shop stood at the bottom of Chapel Lane, and my father never let a customer watch him glue a feather. He kept the goose quills in a biscuit tin with a cracked lid, sorted by wing, and he would sooner have lost a thumb than a straight flight.

That spring he made two arrows for the Whitsun shoot, both of ash, both dressed with dark dots he pricked in with a needle so fine you had to hold them to the window to see. One had a diamond head and the other a barbed point like a fish hook. Tom Garside and his cousin Nell had a shilling wager on the butts, and they came into the shop arguing over whose arrow was whose.
Nell's arrow struck the gold on the first end. Tom's went wide into the hedge and came back out with a bramble caught in the fletching. Nobody on the field said much about it, but my father took both arrows back that evening and laid them side by side on the bench, shafts together, heads pointing the same way.
Tom came in the next morning for his arrow and asked for the diamond head, because it was the one that had hit the gold. My father said nothing. He wrapped it in a rag and handed it across the counter, and I watched the two of them through the glass long after the door had shut, both pointing the same way down the lane.
