Two fine line arrows on the inner wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two thin black arrows run down the inner wrist, each pointing towards the hand, with feathered fletching at the top of the larger one. The linework is delicate and even, filled with solid black ink and no visible shading. The wrist is shown in soft natural light against a blurred grey background, with a fine silver chain bracelet worn just below the design.

Brother Anselm gives you the fletching shears on your fourteenth day in the workshop, and you have already ruined three shafts. The ash comes down from the abbey woods in bundles that smell of sap and cold rain, and the old fletcher, who has not spoken since the Michaelmas storm, only lifts his chin at the bench when you come in. You learn to split goose feathers with your thumbnail, to bind them with glue and sinew, and to keep every vane lying the same way so the arrow will spin true.

One evening the abbot's steward brings word that the lord at the mill wants two arrows before the Sunday hunt, and that the second must be finer than the first. You sit up with a tallow lamp, tapping a slender bolt into shape while the bell for compline rings across the water. The old man watches from the dark and says nothing until dawn, when he takes the second shaft, turns it over, and sets a small iron point on it with two fingers.
"Finer is not thinner," he says. "Anyone can make a line narrow. Make it so it still goes where you send it."
He walks you out to the wall with both arrows. You loose the lighter one across the frosted meadow and watch it leave the string with a faint hum and drop, true, into the reeds beside the brook. When you wade out to fetch it, the feathers are still trembling.
