Fine line arrow on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small arrow is drawn in thin, even black linework on the inside of a forearm, with three chevron-shaped feathers at the top and an open triangular head at the bottom. The tattoo is unshaded and solid black against light, warm skin. Another person's wrist and hand rest across the lower part of the frame, wearing a gold watch and layered teal and gold bracelets.

The feathers had to come from the left wing of a grey goose, because the right wing curled the wrong way and the shaft would never fly true. Mrs Ashdown taught me that before anything else, and I argued with her about it through a whole damp winter in the workshop behind the Eel Wife inn. She never argued back. She just handed me another goose and a knife and went on splitting ash.

The arrow on the top rack was different. It had three feathers laid close together at the nock, cut so neatly they looked like a row of birds turned to the wind, and its head was an open triangle of bent wire with no point fitted. Every Lent she took it down, ran her thumb from the feathers to the wire, and put it back. I asked her once whether it was for a customer who had never collected. She said it was for the man who had bought it, long before my time, and who had come back through the fen in the rain to ask her to fletch one more.
When I left for Lynn the spring I turned seventeen, she pressed the arrow into my hands wrapped in oilcloth. I wanted to tell her it was useless without a point, that no archer would pay for it. She only said that a thing can be drawn true and still never be loosed, and that the fen would show me the way home even if I forgot which way I had come.
