Two flies and a Free Food sign on the abdomen

Other · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows two cartoon flies with large round eyes and a wooden sign reading FREE FOOD, set around the navel. The linework is outlined in dark grey with light grey shading on the flies and a muted red fill on the sign. The motifs are spaced across the lower abdomen, with the flies above and the sign below, against a neutral skin background.

Dot said the sign had been nailed to the lamppost outside the Crown Street bakery since before the trams came off, and Ivor said that was exactly what a sign would say if it wanted flies to come closer. They argued it out along the wire of the canal railing while the bakery's back door sighed open and shut, letting out a breath of warm bread each time.

The sign was wooden, cracked at one corner, and whoever had painted it had run short of red halfway through FOOD. Dot went first, her great round eyes wobbling with the effort of looking straight ahead. Ivor followed, certain a trap would be sprung by the first creature to read it aloud. Nobody did. A night baker called Mr Pell came out with a tray of seconds, saw two flies sitting on his sign, and laughed so hard he dropped a loaf into the gutter.

'Free,' he said, wiping his floury hands on his apron. 'Always was. Trouble is, nobody trusts a sign that doesn't ask for money.' He broke the loaf on the railing and left them to it, humming something off-key about the last tram.

Ivor ate until his legs were sticky and he could not remember why he had ever been suspicious. Dot kept her eyes on the sign. Long after the bakery lamp went out she was still reading it, FREE, FOOD, FREE, FOOD, as if the words might change if she stared hard enough.
