Two forearm tattoos of capped figures

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The photograph shows two forearms held out towards the camera with the hands clasped together at the bottom of the frame. The left forearm has a solid black cap shape with a fine black outline beneath it suggesting flowing hair or a figure. The right forearm has a bold solid black cap above an outlined bearded face with an unshaded white centre, set against grey pavement.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nobody at the Carlton Ballroom could tell which of the Harrow boys was which after the second interval, and that suited them both. Eddie wore the cap to dance and Ray wore it to bet, and the arrangement had held since they were fourteen. I kept the cloakroom, so I watched the cap go on and off its hook a dozen times a night, always with a wink I was meant to miss.

On the Saturday of the spring dance, Ray came to the hatstand without it. He stood there with his hands in his coat pockets while Eddie was out on the floor with Lorraine Dacey, who sang with the band and had a voice that made the old men put down their pints. "Where's the cap?" I asked. Ray said Lorraine had borrowed it for the last waltz, pinned her long hair up beneath it, and walked out the side door into the rain. He said he had decided that was between her and the cap.

I hung a ticket on the empty hook and went back to counting coats. At closing, Eddie came in alone, soaked to the collar, and told me he had won a bet off his brother, though he would not say what the bet was. He set a single pin on my counter, the kind a woman uses to hold a bun in place, and asked if I had seen the cap. I said it had gone out the side door.

He nodded and left the pin where it lay. I didn't tell him that Lorraine had come back for her gloves an hour earlier, cap in hand, and that she had left the cap on the hook where Ray would find it in the morning.
