Matching cap and beard silhouette tattoos
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two forearms show a matched pair of black tattoos. The left one has a solid black cap or dome above a fine line outline of a hand or fingers, and the right one shows a bold solid silhouette of a bearded face wearing a cap with a brim. The work is in black ink only, with clean, simple linework and flat solid fills against a grey pavement background.

The gate at Hollin Bottom had frozen shut by the third week of January, and Dad's cap was still hanging on the post where he'd left it the morning he went down with the flu. Nobody touched it. Mum said it looked like a crow waiting for someone to feed it.

My brother Tomas and I took the ewes across the top field in a wind that came straight off the Pennines with nothing to stop it. We had a bet: whoever got the lamb out of the frozen drain first would have the other's milking rota for a month. I knelt in the slush and felt for the back legs the way Dad had shown us, while Tomas stood over me with the torch, talking rubbish about how the ewe had looked at him funny.
The lamb came out slick and steaming onto the snow. "You win," Tomas said, and then, quieter, "He'd have been proud of you." I didn't answer. I wrapped the lamb inside my coat and walked it back down the field with the torch bobbing ahead of us, and neither of us mentioned the bet again.
That evening I lifted the cap off the gate post, knocked the frost out of it against my knee and hung it on the hook by the back door, where it belonged. Tomas came in, saw it, and said nothing. He just hung his own beside it. In the morning the gate had thawed enough to swing.
