Matching WALL-E and EVE wrist tattoos
Other · Mixed · Photo
Two wrists show matching cartoon tattoos of the robot characters WALL-E and EVE, with a small pink heart above WALL-E. The linework is fine and dark, with soft grey shading on the robots' bodies and heads. The tattoos sit on separate wrists placed close together, and the rest of the frame shows skin and a wooden floor.

Dear Ruth,

The Bramleys at the bottom of Halse Orchard are dropping early this year, and I have been up since five gathering the windfalls before the wasps get them. You will laugh, but the old compactor Dad left in the barn has taken to following me down the rows. Some mornings I find it parked under the Discovery with its tracks full of fallen fruit, stacking them into neat little cubes as though they were treasure. I have stopped shooing it away.
Last Tuesday a white machine came over the hill on a string of drones from the ministry people, egg-smooth and sharp, sent to check whether anything still grew on the old land. It hovered above the orchard for an hour and then settled beside the compactor. The rusty one clanked forward and held out a crumpled leaf it had been carrying since spring, and the white one went completely still. I thought the whole thing would short out. Instead it tucked the leaf carefully into its chest, as if it were a letter it had been waiting years to receive.
I cried a bit, if you must know. Don't tell Dad. The inspectors left with a sample and no report, and the two of them stayed among the trees until dusk, humming, sorting the apples into one crate with the gold ones on top. Come up at the weekend and see for yourself. Bring the good flask.
Love, Mo
