Sunflower tattoo below the bust
Botanical · Chest · Colour · Photo
A sunflower is tattooed centrally on the upper abdomen, just below the bust, with its petals fanning downwards and a dark brown centre with dotted detail. The petals use orange and yellow shading with darker outlines, and the leaves at the base are muted green. A black censor bar covers the upper chest, and the photograph is cropped below the face.

You notice the sunflowers before you notice the boats. Somebody has pushed a row of them into rusted paint tins along the top of the harbour wall, their heads gone heavy and brown at the centre, the petals burnt orange where the salt hasn't taken them. Old Tam Rudd swears they were there before the breakwater. Nobody has ever seen him water them.

The Mary Ellen goes out at four with you aboard, hauling pots off the rocks past the lighthouse, and the skipper keeps one eye on the wall because that is how you read the weather. When the heads turn to the sea, the shoal is coming in close. When they face the town, you run for the slip. Today they all face the town, bent forward as if bowing to something in the harbour mouth.
You bring up forty crab pots and a dead conger, and the gulls follow you all the way back. Tam is on the wall with a bucket, pinching off a spent head and dropping it in the water. "Seed for next year," he says. "They always come back if you leave the middle for the birds." You don't ask how he knows which ones were the last to bloom.
Next morning the wall is bare where he cut them, and the tins sit in a row like upturned cups. Then, at the edge of the car park, a single yellow head has opened where nobody planted it, turned hard toward the harbour mouth, waiting on the boats.
