Hatched circle with quote on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A fine line tattoo on a forearm shows a circle with hatched shading along its upper and lower edges, with horizontal lines extending from both sides. The words how rare and beautiful it is to even exist run across the centre in a clean sans-serif lettering. The tattoo is in black ink only, set against pale skin and a dark, diagonally striped background.

Dear Ruth,

The eclipse came through at twenty to four, just as the forecast had promised and not one minute sooner, which Dad would have called showing off. I set the old refractor up on the car park wall at Scarth Head before light, and Mrs Okonedo from the chip shop brought a flask and stayed the whole time, saying nothing, which I think was the kindest thing anyone did all week.
When the moon slid across the sun's edge, the light went thin and metallic, like tin foil left out in the rain. The gulls stopped. A dog two fields away started barking and then gave up. I kept my eye to the eyepiece and counted the seconds the way you taught me, and at the very end, when the last bright bead of sun broke out along the rim, the ring of it was so sharp I had to step back and blink.
Mrs Okonedo put her hand on my arm and said, very plainly, "How rare that is." She meant the eclipse, I thought. Then she said it again, slower, and I understood she meant the hour, the hill, the two of us standing on a wall in our coats while the sky did its odd business. It is a wonder any of it happens at all.
I've pinned the printout of the diagram above my desk, the one with the hatched shadow along the edges. Bring the good scissors when you come at Easter, and we'll cut out the rest of the circles together. Love, Nan.
