You learned to ring the cracked bell at Harrowmere the winter the river froze, because the tower stair was the only warm place left in Orlenth and Tamsin had already claimed the rope. Nobody paid for a new bell any more. The king's tax men counted coins in the southern keep and forgot the north marsh entirely, which suited you both well enough.

The scrivener from Vell came up the causeway in March with a case of soot ink and a quill cut square. He charged a loaf a line. Tamsin paid him with her own supper for a week, and you held the lamp while he wrote in letters as dark as a crow's wing. "Say it back to me," she said, so you did, word by word, until the ink was dry and the sentence sat there like a promise nobody could take back.
The floods came in April. The king's barge came with them, offering passage south to anyone who could fit. It had room for one more, the bargeman said, and he looked at you, then at the rope in Tamsin's hands. You went down the stair with your sleeve pushed to the elbow and the lamp swinging. Behind you the bell began its ragged note, each stroke a little flatter than the last.
On the barge you turned your arm to the grey light and read the words aloud until the water took the sound. Tamsin was still in the tower, still ringing, still counting the strokes the way you had taught her. You could not see her from the deck, but you knew exactly where she stood.
