Every evening the lamp on Scarrow Head had to be wound up the tower, and every evening Wayne and Garth Pell argued about who would carry the paraffin. One night in October the fog came in thick off the water and the foghorn cracked and broke. Their mother was lying up with a bad chest, so the boys climbed the iron stairs with a lantern between them, counting the one hundred and twelve steps aloud the way she did. At the top Wayne struck the match, but his hands shook, and it was Garth who held the glass steady while the wick caught. The beam swung out over the grey sea, and a long way off a single answering light came on, which was the Corran ferry feeling its way home.
When the first boat came through the channel, a fisherman shouted up that the Pell boys had saved his nets and his neck. Wayne grinned and said it was nothing, and Garth said it was a good deal more than nothing, and they went on arguing about it until the sun came up. Their mother heard it all from her bed and laughed until she coughed.
Party on, she said to the ceiling, which was what their father used to say, and the boys have said it ever since.
