Two overlapping triangles on upper arm

Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A woman with shoulder-length auburn hair and a white top shows a small tattoo of two overlapping triangle outlines on her arm. The linework is thin, even and solid black, with no shading or fill. The tattoo sits on pale skin against a plain white background, so the design stands out clearly.

The snow had come off the top field overnight, and Dad was already at the feed-store door with the chalk tin when I crossed the yard with the bucket. He wasn't marking the tally board this time. He stood with his back to me, staring at the two triangles he'd scratched into the lintel the year Mum left, one pointing up and the other lapping over it, pointing down.

I asked him what they meant. He said they were the ewe count from before the flood, when the low field had gone under and they'd lost eleven in a week. The upper triangle was what they had kept. The lower one was what the water had taken, and he'd never managed to draw the two lines without them crossing.

We spent the morning forking hay into the troughs without saying much. Near noon the wind swung round and a flock of fieldfares dropped into the hedge, chattering like a kitchen full of guests. Dad watched them for a long time, his breath hanging in the cold.

When I came back with the lamp oil, he had taken the chalk to the lintel and drawn a third triangle, small and careful, sitting in the gap where the first two crossed. He didn't explain it. He just pressed the tin into my hand and went in for his tea.
