Two pale animated characters on an upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A large black and grey tattoo covers the upper arm and shoulder, showing two pale, large-eyed animated-style characters. The taller figure has flowers or a veil in her hair and a bare shoulder, while the smaller figure with a face and hands sits in front of her. The shading is smooth and detailed, with soft greys on the faces and fabric and crisp dark accents, photographed close up against a dark top.

Dear Ysolde, the bell at Harrow Wick has gone quiet again, and the ferryman says it will not ring until the salt comes back into the cistern, not since the old grid drowned. You asked whether I still sleep with the window open. I do. The pale bride from the ruined chapel sits on the sill most nights now, veil stiff with brine, looking in at me with those wide wet eyes as though she has forgotten what I look like and is trying to remember.

Something happened on the third tide of the dry month that I have not told anyone. Her small companion came down the cliff path carrying a lantern made from a cracked helmet, and it held out its thin hands the way our grandmothers taught us to hold out a cup for rain. I thought it wanted bread. It wanted my name, written in the wet sand with one finger, and when I wrote it the bride lifted her head and gave the crooked smile she never gives the living.
The ferryman says a marriage is made when two people agree to be remembered by each other. I do not think that is quite the bargain. I think she has waited on that cliff for a long time for someone to see that the small one is the one keeping her from the tide. Yesterday I climbed up with bread and a comb for her hair. The sand under the chapel had shifted, and beneath it lay a row of brass rings, each engraved with a name I have never heard, and one with mine.
Come home before the spring tides. Bring the good knife. I will leave the lamp lit on the sill, and you can tell me whether I have it all wrong.
