Two palm trees on the skin

Other · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows two palm trees with green fronds outlined in black and brown trunks that curve towards each other, with a small tuft of green grass at their base. The linework is bold and the fronds are filled with flat green and shaded with lighter highlights. The tattoo sits centrally in the frame against smooth, pale skin, with a soft, slightly glossy finish to the photo.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nobody on Scarrow Holm would plant a palm in a north-facing garden, and that was exactly what Ada Penhale wanted to do the spring her brother stopped answering letters. She came up the cliff path with a sack of compost on one shoulder and a seedling wrapped in wet newspaper under the other arm, and found Tobias Gwynn already digging on the far side of the boundary stones, as if he had been expecting her to be stubborn.

They planted one each side of the wall, two bare sticks no higher than a boot. The wind came off the sea every afternoon and tried to flatten them, and for three summers neither of them would say a kind word across the stones. But palms grow the way they please, leaning out for light, and by the fourth year both trunks had bent until the crowns nearly touched above the wall. Tobias said it was the wind. Ada said it was the sun, and that a tree knew better than a man where the light was.

The autumn Tobias's hip gave out, Ada carried his bread up the path every morning and left it on the step without knocking. One day he found the loaf with a sprig of green grass tied round it, pulled from the bare soil at the foot of his own palm. He did not thank her. He went to the wall that evening and stood there until she came out to see what he wanted, and he said only, 'They're touching now,' and she said, 'I know.'

Ada says that's the whole story. When people press her for more, she points up the slope at the two trunks, still leaning, still reaching across the gap for the same piece of sky.
