Two realistic portraits on the backs of hands
Realism · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two large portrait tattoos cover the backs of the hands, with a woman in profile on the left hand and a man facing forward on the right. The woman has a voluminous, sculpted hairstyle and the man has a flat-topped head and heavy brow, both rendered with smooth grey shading and fine highlights. The portraits are set against dark, smoky background shading that fades into the knuckles and fingers, and the photo shows the hands resting on a patterned fabric.

The bean poles had come down in the night, and Ada Penrose stood on the wet gravel in her dressing gown, staring at the broken canes as though they had personally insulted her. Behind the hedge something heavy shifted, then folded itself through the rectory gate one shoulder at a time, the way Victor always did when the arch was too low for him. He stopped at the edge of the bed, wiped his big grey hands on his trousers, and looked at the splintered wood with the patience of a man who had been mending things his whole life.

The fête was at two. Ada had meant to spend the morning on her hair, as she did every Sunday, building it into the tower of pins and lacquer that the village called impossible and her husband had never once admired. Instead she knelt in the mud beside Victor and handed him the twine. He tied the canes with a care that surprised her, his thick fingers working each knot as if it might come undone under a look. Nobody in Little Marlow had ever seen him do anything gently, and yet here he was, coaxing the runner beans back up the frame.
By noon the frame stood straight again. Ada pulled the last hairpin from her bun and dropped it into the soil, and then another, and then the whole glittering crown of them, until her hair fell loose about her face. Victor watched her with his heavy brow lifted, and for once he did not look like something to be feared. The beans were already curling round the poles, reaching for the sun, and when they walked together down the lane toward the bunting and the brass band, the pins lay in the dark earth like seed packets nobody had thought to plant.
