Classical columns and astronomical clock on forearm

Realism · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo covers the forearm and shows tall fluted columns, a large ornate astronomical clock dial with roman numerals and circular markings, and a classical female statue with hair pinned up. The shading is smooth and detailed, with soft greys and high contrast highlights on the stone and metal. A cloudy sky with warm brown and sepia washes fills the background behind the architecture.

Dear Tomasz,

The dial is finished at last, though Master Vadim says it will never keep true time while the damp gets into the case. I have set the hour hand by the cathedral bell and the minute hand by my own pocket watch, which I suspect is the only honest thing in the whole workshop. You will laugh that I have taken to reading the Roman numerals backwards, the way you taught me to read the bells of Prague when we were boys.

Yesterday a woman came in with a crate of brass gears wrapped in newspaper. She wanted the old statue of Hestia restored, the bronze one that stood in the courtyard of the Ivanov house before the fire. Her grandmother had sent her, she said, with instructions to find the figure's hair pins. Twelve of them, each one hiding a second of the day. I found eleven in the crate. The twelfth, she told me, had been pressed into the stone of the columns when the house was still standing, and no one has seen it since.

I have decided to go looking for it tomorrow. The columns in that courtyard are fluted like the pipes of an organ, and the light through the cloud has a warm brown cast in the late afternoon that makes everything look older than it is. If I find the pin I will bring it to you on the Sunday train.

Do not tell Master Vadim where I have gone. He thinks the clock needs a new escapement. It doesn't. It only needs someone to be waiting when the hands come round.

Your friend, Petr
