Two reaching hands tattoo on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows two hands with fingers extended, one from the left and one from the right, nearly touching in the centre. The fine linework and soft grey shading give the hands volume and detail. The design sits alone on pale skin against a dark background, with plenty of space around it.

The net had been patched so many times that Dora could no longer tell which ropes were original. She hung by her knees forty feet above the sawdust and watched Matteo's hand come out of the dark, fingers loose, reaching for the place where her wrist would be if the timing held.

The Halloran Brothers' Travelling Show had shrunk to nine performers, two lorries and a big top with a tear in its north side that the crowd was politely asked to ignore. The bank in Luton had taken the calliope. The clown who did the letters had gone to work in a call centre in Leicester. What remained was the Almost, the last act on the bill, which had once been a flourish and was now the only reason anyone bought a ticket.

Since March the timing had been wrong by a breath. Every night they came within a finger's width of each other, and every night the drum roll covered the gap, so the audience gasped as though they had been cheated of a death. Dora had begun to suspect the gap was the only honest thing left in the building. Nobody was promised anything in it. Nobody was let down.

On the last night of the season the generator coughed and the lights dropped to a single amber lamp over the ring. Matteo swung, released, and Dora went out into the cold air with nothing to hold. His fingers arrived, stopped a hair short and stayed there, open, while the drum went quiet. She reached the same distance back. Neither of them closed it. They hung like that until the generator caught again, and the crowd, which had come to see a fall, found it had seen something it could not name, and drove home without a word about it.
