Teal rose and beaded chain on an ankle
Botanical · Ankle · Mixed · Photo
A teal rose with shaded petals and a few dark leaves sits above the ankle, with a black beaded chain and scrolling filigree lines running down over the top of the foot. The rose is rendered in colour with soft shading, while the chain and swirls are solid black with fine outlines. The leg fills the frame against an orange lace cloth and a dark background.

By the time Brother Matthias lets you near the jet beads, you have learned to keep your breath steady over the wire. He keeps them in a tin that once held Huntley biscuits, sorted by size, and he will not let you count them aloud in the cloister, because counting, he says, is for those who still expect something back.

The rose is the priory's old secret. Every May, in the walled garden behind the infirmary, the one bush that survived the dissolution opens petals the colour of the sea off Lindisfarne, and the sisters pretend not to notice. Sister Agnes used to press a single bloom into the rosary book, where the paper went slowly teal at the edges. You are taught to draw it that way, shaded from the heart outward, with the leaves kept dark, because the leaves are the part that is forgiven.
Then a letter arrives from the coast, the first in six years from Agnes's niece, and it is short. It asks for one decade of beads to be sent, black, with no cross attached. You thread them that evening by the candle, and at the fortieth you find a gap, a place where your thumb slipped and the count went wrong. You do not unpick it. You leave the wire loose so the chain can fall the way a thing falls when it is meant to be carried rather than held.
In the morning the bush is open again, paler than before. You wrap the chain in a sheet of the pressed rose, seal the parcel with Brother Matthias's red wax, and walk it down to the post cart, counting nothing at all.
