Two scroll banners with a quote and footprints
Black and grey · Flash
The drawing shows two ribbon-style scroll banners with curled ends, one above the other, carrying the words I solemnly swear and I am up to no good. Below them sits a small pair of footprints on an otherwise empty cream background. The linework is clean single-weight outline in dark brown ink with no shading, and the composition is centred and symmetrical.

The footprints were the giveaway, Mrs Pargeter said afterwards, though nobody ever found out who had made them. Someone had walked backwards from the bakery door to the churchyard gate, one small boot after another, pressing wet mud into the flagstones of Little Hobb Lane with great care and no little pride.

The Harbour Board sent a man round with a notebook. He asked the usual questions and wrote down the usual answers, and then he asked the children at the school gate, because children always know. Tom Ellery, aged nine, said nothing at first. Then he took a stub of chalk from his coat and drew, on the wall beside the gate, two curled scrolls of ribbon, one unrolling over the other, and in the middle of them, in careful capitals, he wrote the words he had been practising all week. The man from the Board read them twice and went away without his notebook open.
Nobody ever learned whether Tom had meant the footprints as a confession or a dare, and Tom himself never said. He only grinned when the old fishermen asked him, and tapped the side of his nose, and went off down the slipway whistling. The footprints washed away with the next high tide. The scrolls stayed on the wall until the spring rain took them too, though by then half the town could recite what they said.
