Two short slanted lines on a finger
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A small black tattoo of two short, slightly slanted parallel lines sits on the side of a finger. The linework is thin and crisp, with no shading, and the ink appears dark and sharp against the skin. The hand is photographed close up against a dark car interior, with a silver ring on another finger and a gold watch at the wrist.

The slate by the scullery door had carried nothing but milk orders since Easter, so Mrs Pell was not pleased when Dennis Mott picked up the chalk and reached for it. "Two lines," he said, not quite meeting her eye. "Slanted, like the rain coming across the harbour." She folded her arms over her apron. Lodgers did not write on her slate. Lodgers paid for their bread and went out to paint the cliffs and came back in time for supper, or they did not, and she chalked the difference herself.

"It's for the nights we walked the wall after the gale," he said. "Ada Lusk and me. Her father's boat was still out and we didn't want to go to bed without knowing." Mrs Pell remembered the lamp that had burned in the upstairs window until dawn, and the way the ferryman's girl had come down for tea in her wet stockings, laughing at nothing. The boat had come in on the tide. The lamp had gone out. That was the whole of the story, as far as the boarding house was concerned.
She took the chalk back from him. It was warm from his fingers. "Ada leans into her strokes," she said. "Always has, since she was small. You'll want them to lean the same way, or they'll look like a sum that's gone wrong." She drew them herself, two short lines, and the chalk squeaked as she pressed hard. Each morning the scullery girl wiped the slate clean with a wet cloth, and each morning those two strokes came back up through the grey, dark where the chalk had bitten into the stone.
