The swifts came over the Stanhope showground the same week the dodgems went up, low and fast, so close to the caravans you could hear them cut the air. Dad watched them from the step of the shooting gallery with his cigarette going out between his fingers. 'Pair of them,' he said. 'Never see one on its own.'

The gallery was his pride: a tin rail of blackbirds, pheasants and two painted swallows he'd cut from an old biscuit tin in 1979 and never sold. Nobody ever won the swallows. You could hit them all afternoon with a pellet gun and they'd only rock on their wire, the lower one always a little left of the other, as if one had been about to dive and the other had called it back.
The fair closed for the winter at the end of October. Dad's hands had gone stiff by then, and the gallery was sold to a man from Doncaster who wanted the rail for scrap. I went down the night before to fetch the swallows. The rust had got into their wire, and when I pulled, the lower one came away in my palm, light as a leaf.
I hung them from the caravan mirror for the drive south, where they turned in the draught from the window. At the services near Newark the lower one slipped its hook and dropped into the verge. I didn't stop the car. Dad always said you couldn't keep a pair together for long, only point them the right way and let the wind do the rest.
