Two birds on a branch on the wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows two small black bird silhouettes perched side by side on a thin horizontal branch that runs across the inner wrist. The linework is simple and solid, with the birds drawn as dark filled shapes and no shading or colour. The hand is open and lit from the upper left, with the tattoo centred in the lower half of the frame against a plain pale background.

Brother Anselm had kept the bell at Saint Oswin's for thirty winters, and in all that time no bird had ever sat on the rope. The abbot said it was the cold. The novices said it was the bell's voice, which was too loud for anything with feathers. Only Brother Anselm knew the rope itself was the trouble, because it hung from a single bare branch of hazel that grew through the belfry wall, and the branch was slowly dying.

One morning in late March he found two sparrows on that branch, pressed close together against the wind coming off the moor. They did not fly when he climbed the ladder. They watched him with their heads tilted, the way the old women in the village watched a stranger at a wedding. He set down his cloth and his oil can and waited, and the smaller one hopped along the twig to lean its shoulder against the larger.
He told the abbot at Compline that the hazel would need cutting down before summer. The abbot agreed. Then Anselm asked whether the branch could stay until the birds had gone, and the abbot, who had a soft place for things that did not ask much, said that God had made the hazel as well as the bell.
They stayed until the swifts came back. Each spring after that Anselm left a crust on the sill, and each spring a pair came to sit on the branch while the bell rang for matins. When he died they found the crust still on the sill, the branch still green, and the same two birds keeping watch on it, side by side.
