Three small stars on the wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Three small five-pointed star shapes sit close together on the inner wrist. They are drawn in thin black linework with simple, unshaded interiors. The colour is solid black ink against pale skin, and the tattoos are placed off-centre towards the thumb side of the wrist.

Above the wall the three stars hung exactly where my drawing said they would, thin as scratches on glass. I stood there until my feet went numb and found that I was not sorry about the ink after all.
In the morning I gave the chart to the carter's boy and told him to tell the captain the stars would hold until midsummer. He laughed at me. I let him.
