Three small stars on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a forearm wearing a cluster of three small five-pointed stars in black ink, arranged in a loose triangle. The stars have crisp, simple outlines with no shading, and the skin around them is pale and unmarked. The soft focus background shows a sweater sleeve, a warm-toned room and a checked tablecloth.

The lamp failed on the third night of the gale, and you climbed the spiral stair with a tin of paraffin and your brother's coat buttoned wrong. The glass was black with salt. Out past the Carrick reef the fishing boat had been missing since noon, and your father's chart lay open on the lamp-room table, weighted down by the brass sextant that had belonged to his father.

You could not see the sea. Through the gap where the glass had cracked you could see only sky, and in it three stars hung low over the headland, small and hard as pinpricks in a sheet of black. Your father had taught you to take a bearing from them when you were nine: the two outer stars in a line, the third set off to one side like a man who had stopped to tie his boot. He had said that sailors trusted them more than any church bell.

You struck the match, trimmed the wick and turned the mantle until the beam swung out across the water. Then you went back to the chart and marked the three stars in pencil, one for each man still out there, and drew a line from the lamp to the point where the stars and the reef agreed.

At dawn the boat came in under the cliff with its sail in ribbons, and the first man up the steps asked who had kept the light. You did not answer him. You were asleep with your head on the chart and the pencil still in your fist, and the lamp went on burning with its small stubborn warmth.
