Two word tattoos on forearms
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The first photo shows a forearm below a dark sleeve with the words enormous pocket in black serif lettering, the final word cut off by the edge of the frame. The second photo shows a forearm with the words heavy boots in a small black serif font, sitting on the lighter skin of the inner arm. Both images are soft and slightly faded in tone, with plain backgrounds and no colour ink.

The road out of Coyote Flats runs straight for forty miles, and you have been counting fence posts since Mavis dropped you at the petrol station with a bag of oranges and the warning that the wind would take your hat. You have no hat. You have a canvas coat with an enormous pocket sewn into the lining, where the cash goes, and a letter from your sister that you have read so many times the folds have gone soft as cloth.

The heat comes up off the tarmac in sheets. Your heavy boots, bought from a surplus stall in a town you have already forgotten, are a size too big, and every step sends grit complaining up the seams. A pickup slows beside you, the driver leaning across to ask if you're bound for Dry Creek. You say yes before you check the map. He says it's twelve miles past where the road ends, which is a kind of answer.
You climb in anyway. In the cab a dog sleeps on a folded tarp, and the radio plays a hymn in a language you half know. He asks what you're carrying. You pat the coat, feel the crackle of the letter and the weight of the coins, and say, honestly, nothing that will slow you down.
At the creek bed the truck stops. Water is a rumour here: a line of cracked mud and one lonely cottonwood. He hands you a flask, and when you climb out the boots sink an inch into the silt, so you have to work each foot free. You laugh, tuck the letter deep into the enormous pocket, and start walking toward the tree, where someone is already waiting in its shade with two cups.
