The image is in natural colour, with the skin tone and a white vest top with a skull print in the background, and the arm is held out towards the camera.

The typewriter came into Hallam's shop on a wet Tuesday, wrapped in a bath towel and tied with baler twine. Dolores Finch set it on the counter and unwrapped it the way you'd lift a sleeping cat. 'It stopped typing in March,' she said. 'Then it typed one thing, over and over, all night, and I couldn't stand it any longer.'

Hallam found the sheet still rolled in the platen, the ink gone the colour of weak tea. One line, struck again and again until the paper furred: 'You are always exactly where you are suppose to be.' He read it twice. 'Whose is it?' he asked. 'My sister's,' she said, and didn't explain, and he didn't ask. The lowercase e had lost its tail, so every e looked like a c that had given up. He cleaned the type bars with a brass brush and a drop of paraffin, and while the carriage ran back and forth he thought how a machine can only say what its hands were taught to say.

On Friday she came back and the machine typed clean. She had already written an address on a card, a flat in Hastings and a name Hallam didn't know, and she asked him to fold the old sheet inside. 'Should I correct the spelling?' he asked, nodding at the word suppose with its right letters all in place. She looked at it for a long time. 'No,' she said. 'She'll know it's from me.'
