On the Thursday I sat up at the gate with the lamp turned low. Above the ridge, where the peak takes the last of the moon, a light the colour of skimmed milk came down the sky like thread being let off a spool. Under it hung a thing shaped like a pewter plate, ringed about with small lights, and it settled on the mountain without a sound. The beam went down onto the bracken, and old Gwen lifted off her feet as easily as a coat from a peg, and she did not bleat once.

I have written down what I could see. The big banded planet was up over the chapel roof, the one your grandson showed you through the brass tube, and the stars were out in their thousands. I am not a fanciful man. But I looked up at that planet and thought, well, somebody up there has been wanting a sheep for a long while.

Gwen's tag is in the ring of grass. I picked it up this morning, bright as a sixpence, with her number still stamped on it. I am sending it to you in the envelope with this letter. Do not let the constable say I was in the drink.
