UFOs and pine trees in a diamond outline
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black tattoo inside a diamond-shaped outline shows two flying saucers in the upper area, with a scatter of dots suggesting stars and a cluster of pine trees rising from the lower left. The linework is fine and the sky is built up from stippled dots that fade toward the edges. The tattoo is in black ink only and sits on the inner forearm, shown straight on against a plain background.

Pass me that colander, boy, and stop staring at the potatoes like they owe you money. No, sit. You'll hear it properly sitting. Forty years I've cooked on these boats, and I'll tell you what I saw the winter the Hjordis ran the Sogne ferry, because you asked me on Tuesday and I've been chewing on it since.

It was black dark at half two in the morning, the kind where the water and the sky are the same ink. I was up for the bread. Out past the last pines on the north shore, where the rock comes down in steps, there were two lights sitting low over the fjord. Not stars. Stars don't wobble. They were flat, like a pair of pewter plates, each with a dome on top, and they hung there as if waiting for a bus. The frost on the rail caught their glow, and the sky around them seemed to be breathing out tiny sparks.
I got Aksel up from his bunk. He came up in his socks, swearing, and then he went quiet. We watched them for the length of a kettle coming to the boil. Then the smaller one dipped toward the trees, slow as a dropped spoon, and the pines took it into their black. Aksel said that was a gull on fire. I said gulls don't keep their own hours.
Next morning the bread was burnt and the rota had no record of any lights. But I notched the drawer where the small one went down, so those trees have to answer to me now.
