Mountain landscape inside a diamond on a forearm
Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A tall diamond outline frames a mountain landscape with a peak, a row of pine trees, a still lake and layered ridges reflected in the water below. The scene is built from fine black linework and dense hatching that gives the mountains and clouds texture, with no shading in grey. The diamond is centred on the forearm and fills most of the frame against a plain pale background.

The lake was the hard part. My uncle Teodor said anyone could engrave a mountain in a week if they had the nerve, but a lake had to be cut backwards, every ridge in the water copied from its own mirror, and one slip would leave the peaks standing on their heads. I sat on the shingle at Kessel Tarn with the burin in my fist and the sun sliding behind the pines.

Teodor had cut the copper himself, a diamond no wider than my palm, so the view could only be seen through its points. He liked a frame that hid the edges of things. Each evening he came down the path with a flask of plum brandy and watched my hands over my shoulder without speaking, which was how I knew I was doing something right.
In September the clouds came over the ridge early. I worked by lamplight in the hut, the lines growing finer as my eyes tired, until the reflected peaks bled into the water and I could no longer tell which side was true. I nearly scrapped the plate. Then I held it to the window and turned it round, and the lake was only the mountain looking back, which was what it had always been.
Teodor's last letter reached me in October with a single pine needle folded inside. Beneath it he had written: print it now, the water will not keep its shape. I pulled the first proof that night, and when the ink lifted I saw the lake had kept it after all, the peaks and their doubles meeting along one line, two valleys agreeing to be one.
