Mountain and pine forest in a diamond frame

Dotwork · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A diamond-shaped outline frames a mountain peak rising above a dense line of pine trees, with the sky above shaded in fine stippled dots. The mountain and trees are built from dark solid areas and dotted texture, giving depth and a soft gradient toward the top of the diamond. The design is entirely black and grey and sits centred on a pale section of leg against a dark background.

Ward 7 went quiet around three, the way it always did, as if the building had decided to hold its breath until dawn. I was on my fourth cup of tea, gone cold, when Mr Okafor's buzzer went for the third time in ten minutes, and I made myself walk, not run, down the corridor past the drinks machine that hummed like a dying fridge.

He wasn't in pain, not really. He wanted the blind raised. Beyond the window there was nothing but the car park lamps and the dark bulk of the hill past the ring road, a shape I'd stopped seeing months ago. "Tell me what's out there," he said, so I did. I described the ridge, how the pines begin halfway up and thin into scrub, how the sky over it goes from ink to grey to a colour with no name just before the sun clears it.

He listened the way old men listen to forecasts they don't trust. Then he said his brother had once walked a mountain like that in the north, alone, in February, and come down with frost in his beard and nothing to prove except that he could. "Nobody believes you're coming back down," he said, "until you do."

By half five the shapes on the hill had edges again. I raised the blind all the way, and he watched the ridge turn from black to green-grey, then to the pale gold that spreads across the treetops. He fell asleep with his mouth open and one hand loose on the blanket. I stood there with my cold tea and looked at the hill until the handover bell went, and I didn't mind in the slightest that I'd be the one explaining the night report.
