Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a black ink tattoo on the inner wrist, showing the word Україна in a flowing script above a small trident emblem. The linework is clean and solid with no shading, and the lettering is the main focus. A hand with dark nail polish holds a blue and yellow ribbon against denim jeans, with a grey knitted sleeve at the left edge.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Oksana had painted shop names on glass for thirty years, and the one word she could never get right was the owner's own. The baker on Shevchenka Street wanted the letters to lean like someone walking into a wind, and every draft came out upright and polite. She tried brush after brush, sable, then hog, until the floor of the workshop was littered with bristles and jars of rinsed-out gold size.

Her nephew Taras came in out of the rain with a parcel his mother had sent from the village, wrapped in a tea towel. Inside was a tin of old enamel signs, painted for a cooperative that had closed before he was born. One of them read Україна in a looping hand, with a small trident beneath it, the paint crazed and yellowed at the edges. Oksana held it to the lamp and saw that the strokes had been made fast, by someone who knew the word would be read from across a square.

She stopped trying to make the letters lean. Instead she copied the old sign's rhythm, the way the tail of the first letter swept back under the rest, and the bakery's name came out easily for the first time that month. The baker came on Friday, looked for a long while, and asked only whether the gold would hold through the winter. She told him it would, provided people wiped it with a dry cloth and not a wet one.

That evening Taras asked whether she would paint the trident too. She shook her head and handed him the brush. He made it three times on scrap card before his hand steadied, and the last attempt she pinned above the bench, where the lamp caught the wet black of it.
