Umbrella and woman in yellow helmet on upper arm
Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows a black umbrella at the top with ink drips falling from its edge, above a woman's profile wearing a yellow helmet with mechanical details. Loose black splashes and speckled shading surround the figure, giving a painterly, watercolour-like texture with peach skin tones showing through. Yellow and black dominate the composition, and the design fills most of the upper arm and reaches toward the shoulder.

The rain over Harrowmere had not stopped for nine days when Oda Penhallow climbed the scaffold of the lighthouse with a tin of yellow lacquer under one arm and her father's brass helmet clamped on her head. The helmet had been built for diving the harbour chain, all rivets and little round glass eyes, and it smelled of tar and old pennies. Below her the fishing boats sat low in the grey water, their nets hung like wet laundry, and nobody on the quay looked up.

Her father had been the one who knew how to fix the great umbrella of iron that sheltered the town's harbour mouth. Every autumn the rain came in sideways off the Gallow Sea, and every autumn the canopy was raised on its cables to turn it aside. This year the mechanism had seized, and the rain had found its way into the streets, into the bakeries and the schoolrooms, pooling in the chapel pews. Oda had watched him try for three nights before the fever took him. Now the cables were hers.
She worked through the afternoon with a spanner in one hand and the lacquer brush in the other, painting over the rust where the iron had bled. When the last cable sang taut, the umbrella lifted slowly off the sea, black as a crow's wing, and the first drops fell from its edge like ink from a pen. The people of Harrowmere came out into the lanes and stood in the dry circle beneath it, faces tipped up, and Oda, tasting salt on her lips, let the rain run down the glass of her helmet and did not wipe it away.
