Ram head with rose and crescent moon
Neo-trad · Thigh · Mixed · Photo
A ram's head with large, shaded curling horns faces right, with a red crescent moon above it and a red rose with green leaves below. The ram uses bold black outlines, smooth brown and grey shading and warm highlights in the eye and muzzle. The colours are saturated against the pale skin, and the motifs are stacked vertically to fill the length of the thigh.

Nobody at the reunion remembered that it was me who left Harker's gate open the summer we turned fifteen. Dinah Cole had her hair up in a tortoiseshell clip and kept touching it, and Mr Pryce, who taught woodwork and never once smiled, stood by the urn holding a paper plate of sausage rolls like a man waiting to be introduced to his own pupils.

That summer the tup had been loose every evening, and it always went the same way: up the lane past the chapel, head down, to the vicarage wall where the roses grew. Dinah's mother had red ones there, climbing over the stones under a moon so thin it looked cut from tin. The night he got in, he ate the lot, then stood on the lawn with petals caught in his beard, looking very pleased with himself, while the whole village came out in dressing gowns to shout at him.
Pryce found me by the trestle tables and asked, without any heat, whether I still had the knack for gates. I said I didn't know what he meant. He laughed, a sound I had never heard from him, and told me Gideon had been his, named by his wife, and that he had unlatched the field himself every night that summer because the animal had stopped eating and he wanted to watch it run once more before the lorry came. I had spent thirty years believing I was the only one who had ever been reckless for an animal.
On the way home I passed the vicarage wall. The roses were long gone, but someone had planted new ones, and I stood there a while in the dark with the thin moon over the tower, thinking of Pryce's hands on the bolt.
