Two cartoon deer on a forearm
Forearm · Colour · Photo
Two cartoon deer stand side by side, one leaning its head towards the other, with large expressive eyes and pink blush on the cheeks. The outlines are dark and clean, and the bodies are filled with soft blue shading that fades lighter in places, with red antlers and pink inner ears. The tattoo sits on a pale forearm, photographed against a plain pink backdrop.

The last of the big tents came down on a Tuesday in March, and by Thursday the rain had turned the field behind it to grey porridge. Nell stood under the caravan awning with a mug of cold tea and watched Mr Haddow count the ticket money into a biscuit tin. Eleven pounds and some coppers. He did not look up when she asked about the deer.

Bramble and Tuft were the last of the act that had once filled the ring, two fawns painted by a sign-writer in Skegness who had been paid in cheese and never asked for anything else. Nell kept the paint pots and the sable brush, and each evening before the show she dabbed pink blush onto their cheeks while the generator coughed behind the trailers. Bramble, the one with the chipped left antler, always held still. Tuft always leaned his head over to rest against Bramble's neck, as if that were the whole act.
The finale was thirty seconds long now. Nell led them through the flap into the ring, where a dozen people sat on damp benches under one work light, two toddlers and a man asleep with his cap pulled down. She clicked her tongue the way she had been taught, and the deer stepped out on their thin painted legs. In the damp their blue had faded to something like the sky over the sea at Mablethorpe.
When the lights went down she did not lead them back to the trailer. She unhooked the gate at the far side of the field, the one that gave onto the lane and the hedges, and waited. Bramble looked at the dark gap, then at Tuft, who had already tucked his head against his friend's neck. Nell stood in the mud with her hands empty and let them choose.
