Unicorn head with crystals on a leg
Neo-trad · Calf · Colour · Photo
A unicorn head in profile with a spiralling horn and a long, flowing mane sits above a cluster of faceted purple crystals. Dark outlines define the horse's features and mane strands, while soft shading in lilac, teal and pink gives the form depth. Watercolour-style splashes of purple, blue and pink fill the background around the design against plain dark surroundings.

Don't touch the rolls yet, they've not finished their argument with the oven. Sit on the flour sacks, there, where Old Mrs Pryce used to sit when her knees were talking. I'll tell you about the winter the unicorn came down Hadley Lane for bread.

It was the coldest February anyone in Carrow could remember, and the bakery on Tanners Row had been dark for three nights because the baker's boy had run off to sea with the takings. Mabel Quint got up before the milk cart to light the ovens herself. She had a cough and no patience. When she unbarred the back door, there was a horse standing in the frost with its head lowered, and a horn on it so pale it looked like a sliver of moon that had broken off and stuck there.
It did not want bread. It wanted the sack of purple stones kept beside the flour bin, the cloudy amethyst her husband had dug from the quarry above the reservoir and never sold, because he said a stone like that ought to be looked at, not spent. Mabel had kept them thirty years for no reason she could name. The unicorn bent its neck and breathed on them, and the stones began to hum and grow, pushing up through the flagstones in clusters like frozen fingers.
She gave them to it, every one. When the sun came up over the chimneys, the mane had caught the light and the whole lane was blue and pink with it, and Mabel swore afterwards that the first loaf out of the oven that morning tasted of the sea.
