Until the very end script and Deathly Hallows symbol

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A fine black line script reads Until the very end, preceded by three small asterisk-like stars, and runs along the forearm towards a Deathly Hallows symbol. The symbol is drawn with thin, even linework, with a triangle, circle and vertical wand line surrounded by curling scroll ornaments. The tattoo is in black ink only against pale skin on a dark background.

Sit closer, the fire is only just holding, and I have not told this one since my grandmother told it to me in the salt marshes. Three brothers came down to a river with no bridge, only a ferryman who asked for no coin. He asked each of them what they would carry across. The eldest, proud, asked for a stick of ash that could beat any man. The second, greedy, asked for a stone that could bring back the dead. The youngest asked only for a cloak to hide him from the one waiting on the far bank.

The ferryman gave them their gifts and laughed, for the river takes everything back in the end. The eldest fought every man in the valley until a boy with a sling knocked him flat, and the ash snapped in his fist. The second turned his stone over and over, calling his lost wife's name until his voice wore thin, and he never noticed the years going by. Each of them walked to the water's edge, and the water, which keeps its own accounts, took them down without a word.

The youngest kept his cloak and lived a long life of small kindnesses, mending nets and sharing bread with strangers. When at last the figure from the far bank came for him, he did not hide. He stood up in the reeds, drew the cloak from his shoulders and folded it over his arm like a travelling coat, and said, "I have walked with you until the very end, and I am ready now." Death, who had never once been thanked, bowed.

And that is why the old women on the marsh still scratch three lines and a circle above their doorposts. Mind the water when you cross it. Now bank the fire and go to bed.
