Uterus, flowers and banner on a back
Traditional · Back · Colour · Photo
A close view of a person's upper back showing a uterus outline with a ribbon banner reading My Uterus, pink flowers with green stems on either side, and the words Is Beautiful in small serif capitals below. A separate rainbow-shaded anatomical design sits lower down the back. The linework is dark and fairly bold, with soft colour fills in pink, green, yellow and blue against smooth skin.

Ted Pring had run the ballroom at Saltcombe for thirty-one years and had never once let anyone hang a thing above the stage without a committee meeting first. So when I climbed the stepladder on the Tuesday before the Jubilee dance, with a pot of size on my hip and a roll of calico under my arm, half the hall stopped sweeping to watch, mostly, I think, to see whether I'd come down in one piece.

The committee had wanted gold leaf and the words Come Dance With Us, in letters tall enough to read from the pier. I had a tin of bronze powder and no patience for either. I pinned the strip flat, drew a ribbon with a curl at each end, and let pink flowers climb its sides on green stems, the way bindweed climbs a fence when nobody is looking. Then, in small serif capitals, I lettered the words that had been sitting in my head all week: Our Floor Is Beautiful.
Ted came up the steps with his hands in his cardigan pockets and read it twice. He didn't say a word. Lil Pring, who had danced on those boards in 1951 and had never once been asked to a committee, came up behind him and laughed so hard she had to hold the rail. Well, it is, she said. Look at it. Scuffed to bits and still the best floor on the coast.
We hung it that afternoon. Under the banner I painted a row of little lamps along the skirting, using the leftover yellow, blue and green from the shades, and by eight o'clock the band was tuning up and the first couples were already shuffling past the flowers. Ted never took it down. He said the committee could take it up with the floor.
